Our eyes are amazing, complex organs. They take light and turn it into images. But sometimes our eyes need a bit of help to provide us with crisp, clear vision.

Not everyone is a good candidate for laser surgery, so it’s important to talk to your optometrist and discuss your options.

How Our Eyes Work

Our eyes work by processing light reflected off objects and into your eyes and converting this light to electrochemical signals transmitted to your brain where it is processed into images. When light enters the eye, the cornea bends it and focuses it on the retina, which sits at the back of the eye. It is here that the light is converted into the signals that are sent to your brain.

Myopia causes light to focus in front of the retina, which makes objects far away appear blurry. Hyperopia causes light to be focused behind the retina, which makes close objects appear blurry. Astigmatism is caused by the abnormal curvature of the cornea that focuses light in two different spots on the retina, which causes blurry vision at all distances.

All of these conditions can be corrected in adults using laser eye surgery.

LASIK

LASIK is a refractive surgery that works by reshaping the cornea so that it properly focuses light on the retina. This is done by cutting a paper-thin flap in the surface of the cornea, using a laser to reshape the cornea, and then replacing the flap, which acts as a bandage and will heal on its own over the next few days.

PRK

PRK surgery is another kind of refractive eye surgery that uses a laser to correct vision problems by reshaping the cornea. However, it works a little differently than LASIK.

During the PRK process, the top layer of the epithelium (the cornea’s outermost layer) is removed from the surface of the eye using an alcohol solution, a brush, or a laser. Then the cornea is reshaped using a laser. A bandage contact is usually placed over the eye after the surgery, or you may be required to wear an eyepatch or special sunglasses while your eye heals.

Both procedures are safe, although there are possible side effects, and their effectiveness is unique to you. We can discuss all procedures and precautions during your consultation appointment.
